Maxalt RPD (rizatriptan) belongs to the triptan class of drugs, a widely-used and highly-effective treatment in stopping migraine headaches. Getting Started with Maxalt RPD

Maxalt RPD is available in 5 or 10 mg tablets. Most patients are started on 5 mg tablets, increased to 10 mg if 5 mg provides benefit but doesn't sufficiently alleviate symptoms. Lower doses are preferable if they do work; the higher the dose, the higher the risk of unpleasant or even dangerous side effects. Never exceed 30 mg of this medication in a 24-hour period, and do not take other triptan medications within a day of taking Maxalt RPD.

Treatment is simple and similar to other triptan tablets:

• Take one dose at the first signs a migraine is developing.
• If symptoms are not sufficiently alleviated, or the headache returns, an additional dose may be taken after 2 hours.
• Always wait at least 2 hours between doses.
• Do not exceed 30 mg in a 24-hour period.

Effects are felt after 30 to 60 minutes, peak at 2 hours, and gradually decline over the next few hours. Many patients find their migraine is completely gone by the 2-hour mark; others find symptoms are still present but mild enough not to be disruptive.

When Not to buy Maxalt RPD

Maxalt RPD has vasoconstrictive properties, meaning it narrows blood vessels. While this is beneficial in reducing migraine and cluster headache symptoms, individuals who have any heart or blood circulation problems are at significantly increased risk of experiencing serious---even potentially fatal---side effects. Do not buy Maxalt RPD without explicit doctor approval if there is any history of:

• Heart or blood vessel problems
• Severe or untreated hypertension
• Inadequate blood supply to the intestine (ischemic bowel disease)
• Any high risk factors for heart disease or stroke

Maxalt RPD is not effective in treating other, non-migraine or non-cluster headache types of headaches, as these other headaches do not involve the swelling of blood vessels in the brain. Likewise patients should not buy Maxalt RPD to treat hemiplegic or basilar migraines; triptan medications may worsen symptoms in these conditions.
